Appliance Chimney Liner Installation

Any gas appliance venting into a brick or masonry chimney needs a properly sized steel liner. We install liners that run the full length of the chimney, connect directly to the appliance's exhaust, and meet current gas code — protecting your home from carbon monoxide, moisture, and flue deterioration.

Why a Brick Chimney Needs a Steel Liner

Older brick and masonry chimneys were built to vent oil-burning appliances, not the gas furnaces, boilers, and fireplaces common today. Gas exhaust behaves differently than oil exhaust, and without a properly sized liner it can eat away at mortar joints, allow condensation to seep into the brick, and — in the worst cases — let combustion gases and carbon monoxide leak into the living space through cracks in the flue.

A steel liner solves this by creating a dedicated, sealed pathway from the appliance to the chimney termination, sized specifically for that appliance's venting requirements.

Protects the Chimney Structure

The liner shields surrounding brick and mortar from acidic condensation, slowing deterioration and extending the life of the chimney.

Keeps Combustion Gases Contained

A continuous, gas-tight liner prevents exhaust from escaping through deteriorated joints or cracks in the existing flue.

Improves Draft Performance

A liner correctly sized to the appliance improves draw, reduces condensation inside the flue, and helps the appliance run as intended.

Required for Code Compliance

Current gas code and BC Building Code standards require a proper liner for gas appliances venting through masonry chimneys.

What's Included in the Installation

1

Inspection & Preparation

We inspect the existing masonry flue and prepare it for the liner, checking for obstructions, deterioration, and correct sizing against the appliance's venting requirements.

2

Liner Supply & Installation

A steel liner is supplied and installed the full length of the chimney, from the appliance connection point through to the termination.

3

Gas-Tight Connection

The base of the liner is mechanically connected and sealed directly to the gas appliance's exhaust outlet.

4

Insulation & Sealing at the Crown

The liner is insulated at the flue crown, with the surrounding void packed and filled using premium high-strength mortar for a lasting, permanent seal.

5

Rain Cap Installation

A steel rain cap is supplied and installed at the termination, making the completed installation airtight and watertight.

  • Steel liner sized to your specific gas appliance
  • Gas-tight connection at the appliance exhaust outlet
  • Full-length installation — no partial or spliced liners
  • Flue crown insulated and sealed with high-strength mortar
  • Steel rain cap included at termination
  • Work performed to current gas code and BC Building Code standards

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my chimney needs a liner?

If a gas furnace, boiler, or fireplace vents into a brick or masonry chimney that was never lined — or has an old, damaged liner — it likely needs one. Signs include rusting or crumbling mortar near the flue, a strong odor near the appliance, or a chimney that has never had venting work done since the appliance was installed. A quick assessment will confirm what's needed.

Can one liner serve more than one appliance?

No. Each gas appliance needs its own dedicated liner and flue path. Running two appliances into a shared, unlined chimney can cause backdrafting and improper venting, which is a safety concern we address during the assessment.

Will installing a liner affect how my appliance performs?

Yes, for the better. A correctly sized liner improves draft and reduces condensation inside the flue, which helps the appliance vent more efficiently and reduces wear on both the appliance and the chimney over time.

How long does a liner installation take?

Most single-appliance liner installations are completed in a day. Timing can vary depending on chimney height, flue condition, and site access, which we confirm during the assessment.
